Our Emotions Matter to God

By: Ross Jelgerhuis

We are excited to start a new season of Redeemer Radio tomorrow entitled “Psalms and the Gift of Emotions.” Our hope for this season is fourfold:

  • To understand the important role of emotional health in our sanctification

  • To cultivate awareness of the 8 primary emotions (see resource below)

  • To develop skills to healthily respond to emotions and avoid unhealthy responses

  • To deepen our understanding of how the Psalms are an anatomy of all parts of the soul

To help prepare for this important season, we recommend listening to a sermon by Rankin Wilbourne on this same topic (the Psalms and emotions) entitled “Our Emotions Matter to God.” He gives a compelling case for the importance of emotional health in the Christian life and how helpful the Psalms are towards that end. It could also be worth checking out Chip Dodd’s chart of 8 feelings; we will use this as our framework for the season – devoting an episode to each of the 8 feelings and discussing healthy/unhealthy ways to deal with those emotions.

Here is a brief schedule for the season, we hope to stick to it as close as possible…

March 18 - Introduction
March 25 – Hurt & Psalm 56
April 1 – Sadness & Psalm 88
April 8 – Loneliness & Psalm 42
April 22 – Anger & Psalm 137
April 29 – Fear & Psalm 3
May 6 – Shame & Psalm 25
May 13 – Guilt & Psalm 130
May 20 – Gladness & Psalm 150
