Focusing our Minds on Things Above, not on Social Media

By: Sean Scott

New Year, new habits? I wish that were true in my relationship with my phone. I confess that I had big plans for reducing my screen time, to realize all the wonderful things around me that God has called me to be attentive to. I am slowly again giving into the allure of the endless scroll.

So what should I do? Jesus calls us to take drastic action against things that make us sin. Is my social media or broader phone use a sin? How do I know if it is a problem? Is it something I can live without? These questions bounce around in my head often. I think a social media fast could be in order.

This short clip of a mom of four kids sharing her month-long fast from social media is an encouragement to me as I reflect and pray, asking God to help me do battle against my distracted mind. In my journey to steward my time, talent and treasure, maybe a fast of social media is a good idea to refocus on surrendering my time to the Lord. I hope this serves as an encouragement to you and that we heed the words of Paul:

“…Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9)
